Super Genius on a Segway

In this week's Douglas Budget my column is all about the super genius idea I have for the future of my town. Go here and read all about it and feel free to use it for your town too. Just remember to give me credit for the idea. And lots of money.

Because y'all are so special to me (and my editor at the newspaper won't let me do it there), I am sharing 50 seconds of video of the inspiring event.

I apologize for the shaky camera*, but as I had only learned how to ride the Segway five minutes before and was on a busy public street, why wouldn't try to ride the thing with one hand while filming?

My cocky attitude goes away at about the 45 second point when I ride over a bump the size of the Great Wall of China and almost have a heart-attack.

* Or am I just super cool? Because we recently saw The Hunger Games and the first twenty minutes of that movie were so shaky I felt the need for Dramamine.

  1. I'm super jealous. Riding a Segway is one of the items on my bucket list. And when I say bucket list I mean a list of things I want to do before I die that I keep in a bucket.

    1. That's funny, because I have a list of things I need and one of them is a bucket.

  2. Those things can be dangerous if the inventor/founder rode one off a cliff accidentally and killed himself. Himself not your himself!

    1. I read that. It was the owner of the company but not the inventor, Dean Kamen who for reals is a super genius.

They don't stop, even if you get off of it, it just keeps going forward. The rental place said to put it up against a wall or a bike rack if we wanted to get off of them for a while. Seems kinda weird, huh?

My Himself is the best Himself and no himself can compare! =0)

  3. I was worried about you and those mailboxes at the beginning.

That looks pretty fun. I didn't know they never stop. Now I imagine them thinking "must. injure. something." in their never ending quest to move forward.

    1. I know, right? They will be one of the first machines to take over the world, throwing nerdy people off cliffs and into mailboxes.

  4. What do you mean they never stop??? Sounds like me on roller blades - uncontrollable forward momentum. Well that answers my question, which was going to be something along the lines of, "Why didn't you stop when you hit the Great Wall? That was terrifying!"

    1. Well, technically, if you hold your feet in just the right position and think calming thoughts, it will more or less stop. But if you're a dork with a camera not paying attention to what's in front of you then...you scream like a sissy and quit the tomfoolery.

But then later your confindence builds and you start hot-dogging in front of your in-laws (and hundreds of other people in the parking lot) doing 360's and fall off and the machine runs over your feet.

I should do a safety commercial for Segway.

    1. No, but you know how slow the government can be. I'll give them another week before I start my sit-in of City Hall.

    1. Yeah, it definitely wasn't the safest thing to video while segwing!

Plus, I'm not graceful under the best of circustances when I know what I'm doing, much less 30 minutes into learning something new!
