Enter the Dragon: Algebra

My column is up at the Douglas Budget and you should go there now and read it because in it you will find out:

1. just how small my brain is

and

2. why rules are good *and* bad

and

9. that math is the key to everything, even cooties.

Please?
Mr. Tire (Mr. Peanut's 3rd cousin) really wants you to.

It's kind of embarrassing to admit how much a math class (that I get no credit for whatsoever and doesn't really matter if I pass or not) scared me. I'm no genius for sure but in general I don't go around feeling like a complete and utter moron. Enter Algebra and her evil minions Word Problems and I turn into a dimwitted dingbat.

It scared me but I took the class anyway because if I go back to school I'll probably need to remember how to get x and y on a train going different directions and then figure out how fast they'll get to Uranus (hehehe) and more importantly, math ain't the boss of me.

And you know what? After six weeks of, "oh, this isn't so bad, I get it" to "I am the stupidest person that ever lived and I should jump off the nearest bridge because I will never pass this class and I'll have to be a hobo" and every feeling in between, I passed.

I passed.

I'm like the Bruce Lee of math now. Until the next class, that is.

  1. Math is the universal language of the universe. Now that you've passed your class, when the aliens finally visit our Earth you'll be able to compliment them on their bean dip.

    1. Once I had a dream that I was taken to a small pod ship by friendly aliens and there was NO BEAN DIP which is how I know it wasn't real. Apparently.

  2. I'm so, so bad at math. This makes me extra mad because I'm a girl and I don't want to perpetuate stereotypes.

    1. I know! I hate that too. It makes me want to punch Barbie in the throat.

  3. I'll go have a look :-)... I can't bear math and even just the mention of it makes my brain freeze up. Nothing scares me more!

  4. I was great at math until I realized they'd mixed the alphabet into it.

    1. They really have a lot of nerve putting letters in the mix like that. And they don't even spell anything.

      Hey, thanks for riding along!!

  5. I'm not even sure math is a real thing, they just add it in to school to weed out the people who are going to give up just because stuff doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

    1. Ha! Well they won't get me to quit, I hardly ever make sense!!

  6. Last summer I had to sign up for an online statistics class. I thought, man I'm golden, my kid is a math major at ASU. Damn kid moved into her own apartment 10 days into it. I thought I'd have a nervous breakdown.

    1. A math major?! I can't even imagine what a math major's brain must look like on the inside. Mine is all filled up with useless facts about tv and movies, there's no room for anything else.

That was pretty rude of her to move out and get her own life just when you needed her brain. I guess she's too old to ground, huh? ;)

  7. math! ugh.
    never been good to me.
thanks goodness for calculators...i still have to count on my fingers at times...which isn't easy once you get past 10...or 20 if i use my toes too! :)

    1. Calculators have ruined my basic math skills. But that's ok, I'd never get through the bookkeeping without it!

  8. I enjoyed your newspaper column so much - maybe because I feel the very same way about math. Funny thing is, I can often figure math "problems" out, but I often have to do it by going in the back door & doing it my own way.(Does this mean I, too, think I'm in charge of the universe?) With those word problems I always figured they'd mean a whole lot more to me if they were examples of how I might use math in my everyday world - trains leaving/crossing paths is not one of those ways.

Proud of you, Tumbleweed, for taking & passing the class! When it comes to attending school, we all just have to play by the "rules" and do what they say to some extent... I'm sure you'll figure out the rest of the extent on that, so you can, indeed, rule your part of the universe.Good luck on that - and may the math force be with you!

    1. Thank you Ladybug! I need all the math force I can get and then some.

It's funny you mention figuring out word problems your own way. I read one to Himself to show how difficult and impossible (I thought) the problem was and he FIGURED IT OUT! Not the "right" way but still had the right answer. It made me so mad-and then I felt even dumber! :)
